Do you need insurance for your Koi?

Koi insurance is available through some, but not all providers. Koi, like many other assets in your home, can be very valuable to you both personally and financially. For this reason, many koi owners do insure their fish. It may be possible to insure your koi fish and koi pond through your current homeowner’s insurance policy. Yet, this may not be the best policy for koi and it may not even be available through your carrier. If not, other options are available.

Why Koi Insurance?

Why do you need to have insurance for your koi? The obvious answer to this is that they are expensive investments that you wish to safeguard. Keep in mind that koi are exposed to the environment in most areas. They are often out in the garden without anyone supervising their safety. Because of this, many owners decide to insure their fish.

* Insure the koi from theft. Although you may not realize it, theft is one of the most common problems owners have with their fish. People will steal these expensive fish to resell them or even for their own pond. If you have insurance, you do not have to worry about the replacement cost.

* Insure your koi from death or catastrophe. You have heard stories of people having their entire school of fish killed by local animals and critters. You may have heard of the tragic loss of koi due to an owner’s mistake in treating the animals. In either case, it is important to have insurance to help you to recoup some of the loss.

Koi insurance helps to cover the cost of replacing the fish. Some policies will not pay out in cash, but will pay for the replacement of the fish. This eliminates the risk of people abusing the system.

Things to Keep In Mind

Shop around for koi insurance before you settle on one company’s policy. You may find a significant difference in the costs from one company to the next. Just as many people seek out and compare free auto insurance quotes before committing to a particular company, you should do the same for your koi insurance. Some companies may also require an appraisal to occur.

Keep in mind that some policies only cover the cost of replacing the koi, not the repair or replacement of the koi pond, if damaged. If you want insurance to cover the pond as well, be sure to secure this in particular. In addition, if you move the koi out of their pond, they may no longer have coverage by the insurance policy.

The insurance policy’s value is the approximate value of the fish should they need to be replaced. The premium you pay on the koi pond is a direct relation to the actual value of the koi, but you may be able to insure them at a future value, depending on the insurance agency.

In most situations, koi insurance is an add-on to your current homeowner’s policy. This is often the least expensive method to obtaining the coverage rather than purchasing a separate policy just for the fish. Be sure to read the fine print. Some accidents and incidents may not have full coverage.
