On July 28th and 29th, The ZNA Northwest Chapter held their 27th Annual Koi and Goldfish Show at the World Forestry Center in Portland, Oregon. Leo Marsh was our Show Chairman this year. Our Judges this year were: Vergil Hettick, Ph.D., Head Koi Judge, ZNA Certified; Nicole Lembke, Assistant ZNA Judge, ZNA and AKCA Certified ; Larry Gil, AKCA Certified Judge; and Bryan Bateman, Assistant Head Judge, AKCA Certified. Head Goldfish Judge was Dr. Art Lembke, AGA Certified; and AGA Goldfish Shadow Judge was Bay Bateman.
Dr Tim Miller-Morgan and his assistant Dennis were at the show to answer questions and to present a seminar on the KHV virus.
Even though the Koi fish count for the show was down a little this year, the quality and sizes of the Koi entered was up. We had fish from Washington, Oregon, and California competing for top prizes and awards.
The Grand Champion this year was a gorgeous Kohaku, owned by Carolyn Swanson, of Truckee CA. The pattern on her back looks like two mudmen. The fish is not only large, her confirmation, skin quality, pattern, depth of Hi and quality of white, made her the Grand Champion that she is. Reserve Champion was a beautiful Sanke from Spokane, belonging to Dan and Sharon Olson. The Young Champion was a beautiful Shiro Utsuri, owned by Don and Joan King of Canby, Oregon. This young Shiro has twice taken the Young Champion Award at our Show. Baby Grand Champion was owned by Brad Conway of Salem, and was a beautiful 4 step Kohaku, with perfect white and deep Hi. The ZNA Award this year was given to a gorgeous doitsu Ochiba, owned by Larry and Pat Christensen, as the best Kawarimono.
Best in Size 1 was a Ki Utsuri, owned by Lam Nguyen; Size 2 was a Showa, owned by Larry and Pat Christensen; Size 3 was a Kohaku, owned by Don and Joan King; Size 4 was a Showa, owned by Don and Joan King; Size 5 was a Showa, owned by Dan and Sharon Olson; and Size 6 was a Kohaku, owned by Carolyn Swanson. Grand Champion Novice Award was awarded to Daren and Jody Beck of Salem Oregon for their Hikarimoyo Mono.
We ended the evening with the Judges pointing out why they selected the top winning fish, as we watched a power point presentation of the fish and the Show, by Pete Miller and Don King.
